![]() Although short-lived, the SSM2040 filter had a unique sound different from a Moog, ARP, or other 4-pole lowpass filters. ![]() You have probably heard of the SSM2040 filter chip, used in the Prophet-5 Rev 2, Voyetra 8, and others. “The E440 is based on the 5U MOTM-440 filter with additional features such as separate outputs for each filter slope and an input Drive control. If this thread is just people posting any filter for any reason it could grow to a massive list of almost every eurorack VCF. But I'm still not sure because "rockstar" (adjective) is not clearly defined in the context of this thread. I get the feeling this thread is something of a compilation of a historical record of mass produced vintage analog synthesizers. I'm not sure if we should reference the original synth or the clones. I think there are a few different Yamaha filters that got cloned. Is that the Yamaha thing? OldCrow also did some Yamaha VCF clones. With the diode ladder, that'll take some thinking. Now you need to further quantify it's lo-fi value. But like for instance, I look at something like the diode ladder, and it's value is lo-fi. The question is, what do some of these filters do that others don't? It's hard to quantify their value. I'm less interested in "brands" unless they've done some sort of novel hybrid, but even still I would list that and then the brand. It's impossible to wade through the list on modular grid because it's bottom up, and I'm interested in looking at this top down. What is the definition of a rockstar VCF? Vintage? Used by rockstars? Zappa used an E-MU. What about Italy and France? We have elka and RSF. What about farfisa? There are a lot of vintage Russian and German synths that Americans just don't know at all. Vermona had some electric organs that were mass produced. There is a long history of mass produced vintage filters but I feel like this is just scratching the surface. There is the original 900 series modular. There are a lot of Moog ladder filters but you put one. My only complaint is that you have all the prophets as one item. Should add some EMS synthi VCS or something. But I've sort of struggled with how to categorize digital filters. I have the most of the listed filters already, including the QPAS, which I need to add into the list. I gotta start with the common stuff first and then move from there. That's also the inspiration of this post. Doesn't mean I think the overdrive pedal "makes the amp tone." Even if I have a "tube screamer" I have a couple of those. I also like overdrive pedals, I own like 10 of them. Basically it's impractical to reproduce the depth of functions of something like a Stereo Dipole for every single voice of a new-age analog polysynth, and also (apparently) too complex/expensive to drop into the usual monosynth (a lot of which are presented as budget or simple bassline options), however such beasts have a place in the modular world.īTW who said I am boiling down the sound of a synth? I just like doing filter passes on audio. Stereo Dipole, 100 grit, Belgrad, Bionic Lester mkIII, Morgasmatron, QPAS etc - start exploring. However, Euro has a lot of filters far far more capable and/or innovative than all old fixed architecture synths for sure and still today far beyond almost all new synths to boot, and a lot of exploration is to be had with them. Sure a lot of old-school filters are really good, in fact I have quite a few clones of them in modules like the Jove, VCF-74, IME polivoks, and various G-storm ones (probably the Gyrinx being my fav, based off the Synton Syrinx). It sounds more like you mean, "official mass-produced analog synth filter list" which is rather different from what is available in Euro.
